At FMT, it is our goal to develop the most skilled and experienced workforce in the inland marine industry through continuous training.

We are committed to achieving this goal by:

Florida Marine’s Training Program ensures that employees and crewmembers receive all required training prior to beginning work as well as all appropriate refresher training in accordance with all applicable guidelines.

FMT uses a multi-faceted approach to accomplishing these training goals:

  • Computer Based Training (CBT) is conducted within the Florida Marine Learning Management System (LMS) and includes professional development, regulatory requirements, navigation and health and safety training.
  • Safety Training Lesson Plans, developed in-house by Florida Marine, are conducted as a group and build on professional development, supervisory skills, on-the-job training and health and safety lesson plans.
  • Port Captains and Shoreside Leadership conduct Safety Training during vessel visits focusing on emerging regulatory and industry requirements, navigational safety and health and safety training.
  • The Florida Marine Training Center conducts refresher and remedial training, which includes hands-on training as well as classroom training covering such areas as tow work, line handling, tanking, first aid, professional development, and leadership curriculum.
  • Interactive training is conducted as part of refresher training including but not limited to the following:
    • Captains’ Meetings (all Wheelmen attend)
    • Tankerman Team Building Sessions
    • Engineers’ Meeting

All crewmembers and employees, including entry-level, experienced and trip personnel, receive all required training appropriate to their positions as well as the following:

  • All crewmembers must be familiarized with the Company’s safety rules.
  • All employees must make it their primary goal to discharge their duties in the safest means possible.
  • Florida Marine considers safety a primary goal of every employee, and it is a condition of employment for all employees.
