Our Commitment to Safety

AT FMT, OUR SAFETY GOALS ARE:

To achieve these goals, we have established multifaceted programs focused on:

  • Safety awareness.

  • Safety-conscious attitude.

  • Safety action.

We strive to build these programs through:

  • Partnering with the Delgado Community College Maritime, Fire, Radar & Industrial Training Facility to provide regulatory training.

  • Employing a Safety Team focused on providing encouragement and support to both shore-side personnel and vessel crews.

  • Equipping our crew with programs encouraging them to be alert and vigilant and to report any circumstances they believe might lead to an unsafe condition.

  • Offering safety incentives to employees such as community-wide recognition and monetary rewards.

At FMT our most valuable resource is our personnel, and their safety is our number one priority.

Sustaining a high-performance workforce depends on many factors.  The most important is respect for our people—for their dignity, their talents and their interests.  We strive to maintain an environment that encourages our employees to develop their talents, exercise creativity and achieve superior performance.

Florida Marine has established itself as a leader in the safe, environmentally sound and efficient operation of inland towboats and barges.  Safety initiatives include providing training in Job Safety Analysis (“JSA”) and Last Minute Risk Assessment (“LMRA”) to all vessel crewmembers and critical shore side personnel.  JSA and LMRA programs are used fleet-wide and are an important part of daily life on FMT’s vessels.  All JSA’s used within our fleet are written by the subject matter experts—our vessel crews—who are involved in our day-to-day fleet operations.  Critical personnel from the operations, maintenance, shore tanking, safety and compliance departments have received specialized Marine Incident Investigation training, and these personnel form the backbone of our new Incident Investigation Teams along with subject matter experts, as needs dictate.

While quality and productivity are two important goals, they will never take precedence over the safety of our personnel.  Our commitment to safety extends across our entire team.  Everyone who works for FMT must adopt and work within our safety program.  All aspects of our safety program revolve around training our employees on workplace hazards and arming them with the proper tools and knowledge to work safely by mitigating those risks.

As we continue to grow, our safety policies and programs grow and adapt as well.  Our policies allow us (i) to provide a safe working environment for our employees, customers, and the other service companies we work with each day, and (ii) to adjust to the site-specific safety requirements we encounter.

The safety and health of our employees, and being responsible stewards of the environment, are essential priorities at FMT.  Compliance with all safety, health and environmental laws and regulations is our minimum operational standard.  We provide education, training and leadership to employees to enable and motivate them to understand and comply with applicable laws and our policies.  We conduct reviews of safety, health and environmental practices at FMT’s facilities to verify compliance with applicable laws and regulations, to identify any areas for improvement, and to make any advisable corrections to operational practices. Florida Marine’s motto, “Relentless Pursuit of Excellence,” can be seen each day as we endeavor to provide our employees with a safe, healthy and enjoyable working environment.
